Meningococcal disease caused by Neisseria meningitidis group B is a serious bacterial infection that can lead to rapid death or severe complications such as brain damage, hearing loss, and permanent disability. The disease spreads through respiratory droplets and primarily affects infants, young children, adolescents, and individuals with weakened immune systems.

Bexsero is a multi-component (recombinant, adsorbed) vaccine developed by GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) to prevent infections caused by Neisseria meningitidis group B. It is approved for use in children from 2 months of age.

Advantages of the Bexsero Vaccine:

• Proven high efficacy in preventing invasive meningococcal disease caused by Neisseria meningitidis group B.
• Developed with advanced technology, produced in E. coli cells using recombinant DNA technology. It contains four antigenic components that enhance protection against invasive meningococcal disease and may offer cross-protection against some non-group B strains.
• Early protection: Can be administered from 2 months of age, earlier than previous meningococcal vaccines in Vietnam, which were given from 6 or 9 months old.
• Compatible with other routine childhood vaccines, including diphtheria, acellular pertussis, tetanus, Hib, inactivated polio, hepatitis B, measles, mumps, rubella, varicella, and the conjugate meningococcal ACYW vaccine.
• Safety profile: Evaluated in 13 studies, including 9 randomized controlled clinical trials involving 7,802 individuals (aged 2 months and older) who received at least one dose of Bexsero. A follow-up study on 974 adolescents showed that fever and local/systemic reactions were similar to those of routine vaccines and usually resolved by the following day.

Bexsero Vaccination Schedule:

• Infants (2 to 5 months old): 2 - 3 primary doses + 1 booster dose
• Infants (6 to 23 months old): 2 primary doses + 1 booster dose
• Children (2 years and older) & adults: 2 primary doses (booster dose recommended only for high-risk individuals)
