HIGHLIGHTS FROM THE “HEART PALPITATIONS: UNDERSTANDING THE CONDITIONS AND EFFECTIVE TREATMENT” WORKSHOP

On March 29, K successfully organized the seminar "Heart Palpitations: Understanding the condition and effective treatment", providing valuable insights and addressing specific concerns for a large audience.

At the beginning of the program, doctors from HFH Clinical and Interventional Cardiology Department gave detailed presentations on the two most highly requested topics: recognizing dangerous tachyarrhythmias and treatment methods for heart rhythm disorders.
Dr. Pham Thu Thuy provided a clear and accessible explanation of heart rhythm regulation, the causes of a fast heartbeat, warning signs of dangerous arrhythmias, and guidance on managing such conditions.
The doctor emphasized: "Heart palpitations can have various causes, and not every case requires medical treatment. In some situations, rapid heartbeats are linked not only to cardiovascular issues but also to other conditions such as hypertension and thyroid disorders.
If symptoms such as a fast heartbeat are accompanied by chest pain, palpitations, shortness of breath, dizziness, or fainting, patients should seek medical attention at a reputable facility for an in-depth examination. A cardiologist will determine the exact cause and tailor a treatment plan for each individual patient."

Currently, the two main approaches for treating arrhythmias and preventing complications are medication therapy or catheter ablation.
Dr. Alain Lebon, a cardiologist and electrophysiologist certified by the European Heart Rhythm Association, explained:
"In medical treatment, doctors may prescribe antiarrhythmic drugs to regulate the heart's electrical system. These medications are easy to use and act quickly, but they are narrow therapeutic index (NTI) drugs, dosage must be carefully adjusted for each patient."
Instead of lifelong medication use, patients may consider radiofrequency ablation for a comprehensive cure. Depending on the type of arrhythmia, ablation can be 2-3 times more effective than medication therapy. For example, the success rate of drug treatment for atrial flutter is only 25%, whereas ablation achieves a 95% success rate.”
The effectiveness of treatment greatly depends on timing. Patients with atrial fibrillation (AFib) who receive treatment early—at the onset of the condition—have a much higher success rate than those whose AFib has progressed to persistent or long-standing forms.
Additionally, at K, the success rate of the ablation procedure is enhanced by a highly skilled and experienced medical team, along with state-of-the-art equipment, notably the latest-generation Abbott Ensite X EP System, the first of its kind in Vietnam.

With over 80 questions submitted before the event, we understand that every patient has unique concerns. As a result, a significant portion of the seminar was dedicated to a direct Q&A session with Dr. Ngo Chi Hieu, Dr. Alain Lebon, and Dr. Pham Thu Thuy.
Key discussion topics included:
- Target heart rate in the treatment of tachyarrhythmias
- Medication adjustment and close monitoring during medical therapy
- Premature beats: warning signs requiring timely examination and treatment
- Catheter ablation for elderly patients with atrial fibrillation
- Arrhythmia management in patients with a history of coronary stent placement
- Impact of arrhythmias on patients with hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism
- Exercise precautions for individuals with tachyarrhythmias

Dr. Ngo Chi Hieu shared:
"In reality, during consultations, we often see patients asking about blood pressure, diabetes, and cholesterol levels, but very few pay attention to their heart rate or ask their doctor about it. A fever might just be the flu, but it could also indicate a serious infection—heart rate is the same. I hope that with the knowledge shared today, you will become more aware and pay greater attention to your heart rhythm, allowing for timely check-ups and treatment."

In the coming months, K will continue to host in-depth medical seminars, enabling patients to stay updated on the latest medical advancements and access cutting-edge treatment options.
We sincerely thank you for your interest and active participation in these meaningful events.
